Sporting Events
Working from sketches
1) “Quiet Concentration”. 1990
An Archery Competition in Kent.
2) “Hard Hitting”. 2002
Tennis in the Autumn.
3) “Football In The Park”. 2003
St Hugh’s College Oxford.
Fresher football trials.
4) “Two Ends Meet”. 1998
Lymington Bowling Club.
5) “Twists And Turns”. 2002
Group of Skateboarders. Ipswich.
As I started to sketch the group moved away.
6) “Twist Jump”. 2002
Solo Skateboard. Ipswich
One boy stayed and showed his favourite jumps.
Real Events Imagined
1) “Wimbledon Perhaps”. 1996
A friend wanted to play with Steffi Graf.
2) “Overtaking”. 2005
Chariots of Fire Race in front of
Kings College, Cambridge.
Since I couldn’t be there, in my version a 2nd lap
fun runner is being overtaken by 3rd lap athletes.
Imagined Sports in Real Places
Sometimes I would notice a space and suddenly “see” people, running,
jumping, filling the space
1) “The Wren Library”. 1995
Sedate bowls players people the
“don’t walk on the grass” lawns.
2) “Shooting Practice”. 1996
Ipswich Docklands.
When driving past an empty site full of red brick dust,
and surrounded by red roadworks netting.
I saw netball practice where a warehouse had been.
3) “Jump Shot”. 2002
Haddenham Gallery.
A bright new floor in the exhibition space reminded me of Beach
Volley Ball. In drawing the figures I practiced the movements, and
kept seeing the carpet behind my feet, so the carpet got into the picture too.
4) “Close Tackle – City Spaces”. 1992
Liverpool Street Station. London.
When it’s old grime was covered with the shiny new white
marble floor, I thought any footballer would enjoy the space.
5) “Skateboard Jump Competition”. 1989
I thought this Framlingham alleyway was
just the place for the event.
6) “Barbican Relay”. 1992
The walkways can be cold and echoing. I put in the fun
and bustle of a relay race.
7) “The Short Cut”. 1990
Low tide at Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk.
I imaged a coastal relay race. Here a runner
gets stuck in the mud trying to cut across the creek.
